Cat Nutrition
The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ applies just as much to your pet as it does to you therefore, it is essential that you choose carefully when deciding what to feed your cat, particularly during the growth phase (first 12 months). What your cat needs is different during babyhood, growth, adulthood and with increasing age, he or she may have specific needs as well, plus different medical conditions that may develop where diet plays a role.
As your pet’s nutritionist, your vet will recommend a high quality, nutritional food which has many health benefits for your pet and is easy and convenient to feed. These diets are tailored to your pet’s individual needs, considering their age, lifestyle, size and even their breed! Just one bag can last you for many weeks and a dry food will often work out at a lower cost per day when compared with feeding a wet food.
That’s not to say there isn’t a role for tins and pouches but as vets we tend to use these foods in special situations – post-surgery for example, when pets have different needs. A tin or pouch of food is usually about 80% water which makes it an expensive way to feed your pet. In general, a good quality dry food works out less expensive per day than tins or pouches and is better for your pet’s long-term good health and teeth.
